Summer safety at sea

Emergency number at sea: Guardia Costiera tel. 1530 - Health emergency number: tel.118

SOME ADVICE AND RULES THAT SHOULD BE RESPECTED:

- never go to sea alone

- after a meal wait three hours before bathing

- never exaggerate and come out of the water as soon as you feel cold

- in case of rough sea be very careful and avoid bathing near rocks

- do not bathe when the red flag is flying

- be careful: with red or yellow flag flying there is no surveillance

- if you are hot enter the water slowly

- do snorkelling or scuba diving only if you have passed the specific lessons and use the

appropriate signal ball to let others know where you are.

CAUTION CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!

There usually is an area reserved for bathing within 200 meters from the shore. The area should be indicated by red buoys or by a sign saying “Be careful. Area of sea prohibited to navigation not indicated”.

The safe swimming area (-1.60 meters) should be indicated by white buoys or by a sign saying "Be careful. Safe swimming area not indicated”.

Sailing-boats and motor-boats (including water-scooters) can approach the beaches only through the appropriate signaled passageways, with the engine off or rowing. Wind-surfing boards must be pushed by hand in the safe swimming area.

It is not allowed to bathe in the ports where ships pass or stop, in passageways for motor powered watercrafts, at the mouth of rivers and in front of industrial water conducts.

It is not allowed to fish underwater with a loaded spear-gun within 500 meters from beaches used by swimmers.

All watercrafts must have the necessary safety equipment according to the type of craft.

Remember: all bathing establishments have a sea rescue service from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm and a first aid kit (including an oxygen bottle, respiratory cannulae, artificial resuscitator).
